Wherever you went during the 1980s, there was Russ Erickson. I was always running into Russ, at Smith Rock, Joshua Tree, Yosemite, or Squamish. He was ubiquitous, a rock climbing scenester with irrepressible enthusiasm, as content to climb a 5.6 crack as a 5.12 face. One day while I was hanging out at Castle Rock, Russ showed up and started climbing Mr. Clean (5.10c) in his trainers. No problem.
