Mick Johnston on Latest Rage, Smith Rock, 1985.

Mick Johnston working on Latest Rage (5.12b), one of the most popular routes in the area in the mid-80s, and probably still so. This photo of Mick ended up in my article about Smith Rock in Mountain magazine, along with all of the far superior photos by Heinz Zak, probably only because Mick was a Brit and they wanted a local hero in the article, not just a bunch of photos of Alan Watts looking way cool in his Wayfarers. After the article, everybody and their dog showed up at Smith Rock. Climbers from all over the world were traveling to Terrebonne, Oregon. Even John Bachar came up and tried hangdogging. It was an interesting time.
