Todd Skinner bouldering at the Buttermilks, 1985.
I was traveling with Todd Skinner, Beth Wald, and Bill Hatcher through the desert southwest in the spring of 1985. After a month at Joshua Tree, we made a brief trip east to Nevada and Arizona before heading back west to Yosemite Valley.
Along the way, we stopped for an afternoon of bouldering at the Buttermilks, an amazing area just west of Bishop, California. I shot a lot of photos that day, and had a photo spread in Rock and Ice which included a cover photo of Todd high on Grandma Peabody.
This is not the photo that appeared on the cover of Rock and Ice, but the next photo in a sequence of Todd soloing the easy route up Grandma Peabody, and in my opinion the better of the two.
