Other Routes

SkiMountaineer.com publishes a great page about ski mountaineering routes on Mount Rainier. Even if you aren't a ski mountaineer, it is a good resource for information about climbing routes, with links and pictures.

79. UNICORN PEAK

Matt Robertson points out that the topo on page 316 of Climbing Washington's Mountains is not quite accurate. The route from the saddle to the summit horn is not on the north side of the ridge as depicted, but it is not hard to find or follow once you get there. Read Matt Robertson's trip report for the whole story.

South Spur

The South Spur route is the most popular route up Mount Adams. It is basically a long, strenuous scree and snow hike, with only a little exposure along the summit ridge. Most parties climb it with just an ice ax and crampons, but a rope is recommended in case of a crevasse or two, and to rope up on exposed traverses. A long glissade or ski descent is one of the best aspects of this climb, but glissaders should be careful. Most accidents on this climb happen while glissading on the descent.

North Ridge

The North Ridge (also called the North Cleaver) is another non-technical route that is relatively unpopular but recommended nonetheless. To approach, drive FS Road 23 north from Trout Lake or south from Randle to FS Road 2329, which leads about 6 miles to the Killen Creek trailhead. Hike about 3 miles on Killen Creek Trail (FS Trail 113) to the PCT junction, take a left on the PCT and hike another quarter mile to a climbers' trail leading toward Mount Adams. A climbers' camp is located here at the base of the ridge. Continue directly up the ridge, skirting some rock towers on the right (west) side via scree and pumice slopes, then up steep scree and snow slopes to the summit plateau. Be sure to skirt the gendarmes on the right side; although an easy way appears to go left, it leads to very steep ice slopes on the Lava Glacier headwall. A rope is recommended for one exposed ledge traverse; ice ax required, crampons recommended.
