Tim Wilson on Rock N' Rattle
Tim Wilson on Rock N' Rattle
Rattlesnake Rock is one of those "secret" sport crags that everybody knows about but few actually visit. Those who suffer the horrible "trail" up the north slope of Tumwater Canyon are in for a treat in the form of a half-dozen steep, enjoyable sport routes, the best of which is easily Rock n' Rattle, regarded by many who have climbed it as the best sport route in the state. Maybe so. The route features thin, technical face moves up to and past an overhang on the right side of Rattlesnake Rock's so-called sport wall, a colorful, lichen-streaked cliff that may well be the best sport crag in the state, all things considered.

Rock 'n Rattle was originally protected with scary swedged cable bolt hangers, but the route was retrobolted in 1996, and is much less intimidating, so it should see plenty of traffic in the coming years. It is the cover route on Rock Climbing Washington, which has probably not hurt its popularity. As for that trail, it is long overdue for some rehabilitation work.

First Ascent: Dean Hart, Randy Atkinson, 1987.
Rack: Quick draws.
